OBOADAKA WATERFALLS

Brand Description

The oboadaka waterfall is located at Oboadaka, near Aburi in the Akuapem South Municipality of Easter region of Ghana. Oboadaka (transilated literally as stone box) derives it name from the “boxlike” rocks that are commonly found in the area.

The waterfalls reffered to by the locals as “gugu”, takes it course from the Nsakyi river which is mythically believed to the wife of Gugu. In Ghanaian folklore, waterfalls are believed to be deities with humanlike qualities; they can be married.

During the Odwira festival (the festival of the Akuapem people), which usually takes place in October/November, it is believed that the falls produces a “drum like” sound similar to the sound produced by the fontomfrom traditional drum.

In the past, warriors were believed to hide spoils from war and other treasures such as gold and other royal ornaments looted from battle, at the foot of the falls as it was considered a sacred place and thus very secure.

The waterfall is beautifully hidden in a thick largely untouched forest. The mostly tiered waterfalls with a slight plunge on the side flow all year round but are at its peak during the raining season. During full flow visitors are surrounded in a canyon of falling water. Visitors to the falls are rewarded with a beautiful scenic view after a short hike through the forest.

There are a lots of trees that provides shades for visitors ti hang around and it provides for a fine rest stop when on travel along the mountains,

The waterfall is just 20 minutes’ drive from Aburi Botanic Gardens.
